Mindful Media: Communicating Love

E-mail Print PDF

5LL Book CoverI am usually not one for cheesy self-help books, especially ones on relationships. Five Language of Love by Gary Chapman came highly recommended by a friend, who went out of her way to gift me the book, so I gave it shot. The summary of the book on its website provides an adequate summary of the author's couples' communication framework. The author's background in anthropology immediately attracted me to his methodology. He categorizes people's communication styles into five major categories: (1) Words of affirmation, (2) Quality Time, (3) Receiving of Gifts, (4) Acts of Service, and (5) Physical Touch. It is an interesting way to break down the way two people interact in a relationship. The purpose of the book is to teach people methods to identify different communication styles and use this knowledge to fill your partner's/friend's/family member's cup of love. The book provides examples and exercises for readers. It is a easy read.

Meditation on Political Messaging

E-mail Print PDF

On the eve of the election, many have tolerated the political ads, rhetoric and information, while others (like myself, who is still voting by the way) avoided political messaging like the plague. I am most disappointed with antagonize messaging, which permeates into our personal spaces and social environments. Differences amongst friends are no longer celebrated and fear dominates the political sphere. My rational mind understands the crafting of tactics. However, it seems unethical for campaigns to instill negativity in our society. The youth and the American social consciousness feed off of these proclamation that revolved around disdain, frustration and fear. Of course, there is no code or regulation that takes away their right to say almost whatever they want, almost wherever they desire. Lawyer side note: The first amendment of the Constitution, aka "free of speech amendment," is not unlimited.

Your environment affects your state of mind. Messages trickles down from your conscious mind into subconsciousness, where it is able to festers and create new thoughts. If you ever watched a reality television show with lots of bickering and violence, you're likely to be hot and bothered after watching the show. For example, out of curiosity, I watched an episode of Orange County Housewives and Jersey Shore last year. Personally, I felt uncomfortable after watching both and a little ill after Jersey Shore. Additionally, there are numerous studies that show hostile, unstable and unloving environments are linked to childhood trauma and problems with mental health and character development. SeeUniversity of Pittsburg Office of Child Development (2010), Character development in a hostile environment by Leon Chestang (1972). Although the adult brain is fairly development, the political messaging trend changes their environment and as a result, their children's living space.

Daily Practice: Comfortable with the "Unknown"

E-mail Print PDF
stock butterflyWe live in environments where we are bombarded with information form every angle. The news may tell you to be afraid of this trend and form that insecurity about your image, finances or love life. Sometimes this information is avoidable and sometimes it is not. At the end of the parade of ads, tweets, and facebook updates, it is easy to feel uncertain about our path. At the same time, filling the voids with material goods and indulging in superficial ambitions can easily create a false feeling of certainty. This is something that I realized in my recent experiences and discussion William Bridges' philosophies about transitions.

In Bridges book "The Way of Transition: Embracing Life's Most Difficult Moments," the author explains that in times of crisis people enter into periods of the unknown and struggle to find feelings of certainties in their daily practice. This period can also be described as a time of pain, confusion, uneasiness, or suffering/samsara. Feelings of discomfort should not surpass healthy manifestations, where even in transitions depression or anxiety are not acceptable. Bridges explains that in a period of transition, people make every efforts to prematurely return to normalcy, sometimes at the expense of enabling unhealthy habits and repetitive cycles. For instance, when an individual constantly becomes involved with a similar "bad" personality type for their needs. It is easy and familiar to fall back into old patterns. Yet, this time of turmoil provides the greatest opportunity for personal transformation. This period is especially fruitful when we resist the urge to artificially exit it.

Yoga Mat to Life: 5 Lessons for Friendship and Love

E-mail Print PDF

stock coupleseated meditationAll types of yoga and mediation build awareness to important principles. There are the eight limbs of yoga (wiki), including the Yamas - nonviolence, truth in word and thoughts, non-covetousness, etc - and the Niyamas - satisfaction, cleanliness of mind and body, etc. In Vipassana meditation, the ten parami or perfections guide the practice and practitioner. These examples are from my primary practices and probably have commonalities with many Eastern and spirituality oriented philosophies. Even when yoga is without Savasana or calming effects, the possibility for an individual to open their minds to seeking other yoga styles, become aware of the breath, and start to live healthier lives are enough to encourage the growth of yoga. Physical and behavior changes are the gateway to altering mental processes and perceptions.

The advent of "commercialized" yoga is a way to plant a seed of interest in bridging physical and mental health benefits of yoga and meditation. Yoga in any form promotes the eight limbs of yoga or perfections. Tying the benefits gained on the yoga mat to the real world is not necessarily a natural or self-directed process. Guidance for your physical practice is accessible on the Internet and books. The step by step instructions for poses are easier to follow than philosophical discourse. Explicitly connecting the dots between the babbles of your yoga teacher about love, compassion, and nonviolence with real world areas of your life is helpful to answer: Why you continue doing yoga and possibly seeking more about the practice?

Practice Help: Patience and Perseverance

E-mail Print PDF

Practice is maintenance. Getting to that special place is a fleeting moment and there is not guarantee for it to remain. It may sound like chasing something elusive and achievable. However, awareness doesn't run away from you. We mostly run away from it because it is difficult to maintain. There are so many products, events, and lifestyles created to entice our body and minds. As part of my recent effort to Relearn Lesssons, I attend a one-day Vipassana Meditation refresher course. It was about 7 hours of group sitting with 10 minute breaks after each hour, a lunch break, and discourse session. It was very difficult for me to concentrate and get past the first step of practice - out of the 3 steps - and I stayed mostly in Anapana (observing the breath).
